WIG[Wing-In-Ground] Effect

WIG effect or "Ground effect" is the phenomenon of increased lift and reduced aerodynamic drag of a wing flying close to a surface. [ IMO-Guidelines for WIG effect ]

WIG craft

WIG craft is a multimodal craft which, in its main operational mode, flies by using ground effect above water or some other surface, without constant contact with the surface, and is supported in the air mainly by an aerodynamic lift generated on its wing or wings or its hull, or their parts, which are designed to utilize the ground effect actio [ IMO-Guidelines for WIG craft ]

Article 4. 45.1. 'A-Type'
A craft which is certified for operation only in ground effect.

Article 4. 45.2. 'B-Type'
A craft certified for operation in ground effect, and for temporarily increasing its altitude outside ground effect to a limited height not exceeding 150 m above the surface.

Fuel Efficiency

WIG craft fly with ground effect, making them more fuel efficient than light aviation and vessels. ARON M80 can fly the same distance with only 50% of a helicopter's fuel consumption, and 20~30% of the fuel consumption of other same-class ships. WIG craft can load or unload cargo with simple mooring and berthing facilities, which means it has a low infrastructure cost.

Low Maintenance Cost

Corrosion-free structure made from composite sandwich. Simple construction and design reduce the number of moving parts. Only requires simple wash down after daily use, and standard engine and propeller overhauls.

Safety

WIG craft provides a comfortable boarding experience with no turbulence, rolling, pressurization and seasickness. WIG craft designed triple hull makes it impossible to flip over in the water. Moreover, it is able to safely glide down on the water even if the engine fails during operation.

Modularized Structure

ARON's WIG craft has a detachable wing structure, which makes it easy to ship, move, and store.

Simple Mooring / Berthing

WIG craft marina can be constructed by pontoon that means simple & light docking system and facility with low cost of infrastructure.

Maritime Search & Rescue

WIG craft are cheaper than helicopters and can provide excellent detection performance. It can perform high-speed reconnaissance missions in a wide area to easily take photos and images with low flight performance, and can conduct S&R with low radar detection rate.

Aron Flying Ship Ltd., was established in 2008 and has been developing and building WIG craft, and opened the Korea International Flying Ship Education Center (KIFEC) in Goseong, Gyeongsangnam-do in December 2016. KIFEC intends to contribute to fostering professionals in flight by developing training courses for pilots that will operate all over the world and maintenance crew. Furthermore, we are preparing, in cooperation with the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology, to be appointed as the "WIG Craft Pilot Training Center" of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. KIFEC will give its best effort to provide the best education facilities and training courses for the pilots and mechanics that will lead the future of Korea

In March, 2017, the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology signed an agreement with our company to train pilots for WIG craft, and has been working with our company to prepare the designated education center for pilots to obtain their license.

WIG Craft Pilot?

The WIG craft pilot license is a kind of license for seafarers designated by the Marine Employee Act. It is divided into a license for carrying out the duties as Captain and First Officer of small and medium WIG craft. In the case of small craft, it is possible to operate with a weight of up to 10 tons.

Recruitment of Trainee

ARON has started WIG craft operation training to meet the increasing demand of pilots in accordance with commercial operation of WIG craft. In 2016, ARON did the ship navigator education with Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology. In 2017 and 2018, ARON is planning to provide educational information to candidates who applied for the operation training course.
